It's no secret that I love photographing figs. They're so seductive and exotic. I was surprised to find a farmer's stand with Black Mission Figs recently at the San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, mostly because I always thought figs were more of a fall fruit. But I'm not complaining getting an early look at them.

Beautiful! I love figs -the crunchy seeds especially. Ever tried them grilled? yummy.
Yum! I'm pretty sure that figs ARE primarily a fall fruit. What you see this time of year at the farmer's market is the early "breba" fruit,which I believe is from branches that sprouted the previous year. You get the fruit for a week or two, and then they don't come back in full force until fall.
And I'm with JulieK. I love figs on the grill -- I cut a slit in them, stuff them with blue cheese, wrap them in prosciutto and then grill them. Dee-licious!
Julie, yes, I grill them all the time, firms up the body so it's not so mushy.
Chris, I've never heard of the breba fruit. Makes sense, but I guess the sad thing is we won't see the figs in a week or so. Guess I better grab some more this weekend!
Am very much missing figs now, as we had a black mission fig tree in our yard back in San Jose.
Beautiful photos :) I love figs as well - there was a pizza I had a couple of summers ago on the Cape...it was incredible: figs, fresh mozz, and prosciutto YUM!!
I've been reading about figs recently and that's it, your gorgeous photos have me craving them now... and strangely enough, figs on pizza sound delicious!
Good to know that this is the leading edge of the fig season. I'm trying a recipe from the East Bay Express, infusing gin with figs, and if it's good I now know I can do more in the fall!
